Enjoy the Flambeau River!

June 24, 2025

Canoeing or kayaking the Flambeau River in Price County, Wisconsin, offers a premier paddling experience through one of the Midwest’s most scenic and wild river corridors. The river is divided into two main forks—North and South—each providing distinct challenges and rewards for paddlers of all skill levels

North Fork is both scenic and relaxing beginning below the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage Dam spanning approximately 77 miles to and through the Flambeau River State Forest. Although it includes notable stretches like Barnaby Rapids and Porcupine Rapids its generally more ideal for the beginner or intermediate paddler.

The North Fork will take you through the City of Park Falls, the Pixley Flowage, the Crowley Flowage and then pick up speed below the Crowley Dam. Take out points at the dams are available and are an easy portage from section to section. These upper sections of the river provide a peaceful voyage and plenty of great fishing holes, so pack a pole!

Camping is available at many rustic, first-come, first-served canoe campsites equipped with fire rings, picnic tables, and pit toilets. You can learn more about camping opportunities on the Wisconsin DNR website.

The South Fork of the Flambeau River is more for the wild and adventurous. The river begins at Round Lake and has stretches of class I-V rapids depending on the water levels.

Much of the South Fork winds its way through the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest with highlights like Little Falls Rapids (Class V) and Slough Gundy Rapids (Class II–III) It’s best suited for experienced paddlers, especially during early spring or after heavy rain when water levels are higher. The scenery is spectacular with many shallow sandy areas to take a break or have a picnic. But remember, safety first, always wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket, avoid glass containers, and be cautious when swimming or wading.

There are shuttle services and rentals available from Nine Mile Tavern in Park Falls and Oxbo Tavern & Resort.

It doesn’t matter if you just want an afternoon on the water or a whole weekend adventure.  The Flambeau River offers a peaceful get-away from it all experience in the heart of Wisconsin’s Northwoods. We hope you will enjoy Price County’s Flambeau Rivers!
