As we take a moment to reflect this March, we’re reminded that the story of Price County, Wisconsin began nearly 150 years ago, when the region was officially established in March of 1879.
Created from portions of Chippewa and Lincoln Counties, Price County was named after William T. Price, a Wisconsin state senator and early logging advocate who played a key role in the region’s development. At the time, this area was largely undeveloped wilderness, rich with towering forests, winding rivers, and endless opportunity.
Built on Timber and Tenacity
In its earliest days, Price County quickly became a hub for Wisconsin’s booming logging industry. Dense pine forests attracted lumber companies, while rivers like the Flambeau provided natural transportation routes for logs heading downstream to mills.
Logging camps sprang up across the region, bringing workers, families, and the first signs of permanent settlement. Railroads soon followed, connecting these remote Northwoods communities to the rest of the state and fueling further growth.
Communities like Phillips, Park Falls, and Prentice began to take shape, rooted in hard work, resilience, and a strong sense of community that still defines the area today.
From Then to Now: A Northwoods Destination
While the days of large-scale logging have passed, the legacy of those early years can still be felt throughout Price County. Historic downtowns, local museums, and even the layout of our communities reflect the influence of that era.
Today, Price County has evolved into a four-season Northwoods destination, known for its natural beauty, outdoor recreation, and welcoming small-town charm. Visitors come to experience everything from scenic trails and pristine lakes to local events and vibrant community traditions.
