A Little More Snow and the Sweet Start of Maple Season in Price County

March 12, 2026

Price County may be nearing the end of winter recreation season, but Mother Nature isn’t quite ready to let go just yet. A round of fresh snow is expected across the Northwoods this weekend, bringing a brief return to winter scenery just as maple syrup season begins.

While snowflakes may once again coat the forests and roadsides, local trail conditions tell a different story.

Trail Season Has Come to a Close

Snowmobile and cross-country ski trails across Price County are now officially closed for the season. Warmer temperatures over the past few weeks melted much of the trail base, and grooming equipment has already been put away for the year.

Even with fresh snow expected, conditions will not support reopening the trails. Without a solid base underneath, new snowfall will sit on exposed ground and gravel and quickly melt or become rough and unsafe for trail use.

Visitors and residents are asked to respect trail closures and allow trail systems time to rest until next winter.

Maple Syrup Season Begins in the Northwoods

While the snowmobile season may be winding down, another classic Northwoods tradition is just getting underway.

Across Price County, maple trees are being tapped as local producers begin collecting sap for the annual maple syrup season. Blue tubing lines and sap bags can already be seen running through maple stands throughout the county as producers take advantage of the ideal weather conditions.

Maple syrup production relies on a simple but fascinating cycle. When daytime temperatures rise above freezing and nighttime temperatures drop below freezing, sap begins to flow through the trees. Producers collect the sap and slowly boil it down to create pure maple syrup.

It takes roughly 40 gallons of sap to produce just one gallon of maple syrup, making it a true labor of love for those who continue the long-standing tradition.

A Beautiful Time to Explore the Outdoors

Even as winter recreation winds down, the Northwoods still offers plenty of reasons to get outside. A light snowfall dusting the forests while maple sap begins to run is a classic sign that spring is on its way.

Visitors may notice maple operations throughout the woods, with lines of tubing stretching between trees and steam rising from sugar shacks as sap is boiled down into syrup.

Whether it’s enjoying a scenic drive, exploring the woods, or simply taking in the changing seasons, this time of year offers a quiet beauty that makes Price County special.

Sometimes the best way to experience the Northwoods is simply stepping outside and taking it all in.
